80's HADES Word Of The Day

dilatory (DIL-uh-tor-ee) adj.

Intentionally delaying someone or something; slow or tardy; intended to cause delay, gain time, or defer decision.

---

We were sort of dilatory today, though it wasn't intentional.

If you happened to be listening this morning, you may know that 80's HADES started about 25 minutes later than usual, following almost an hour of dead air. So what happened? We were instructed not to mention the whole thing on the air (on the premise that, as soon as you come on the air with something, people forget about the preceding dead air, so why bother discussing it?), but here's the scoop.

I showed up at about 9:25 (alas, a bit later than usual...not that it would've made any difference). At 9:30, my first job is to shut off the "Green Futures" CD and start the "Making Contact" CD, which always runs for exactly 29 minutes, then we start 80's HADES. Anyway, I arrived at 9:25...and found both doors to the station thoroughly locked up. There are new guys doing the 7-9 a.m. show, and they haven't figured out that all they need to do is put the "Green Futures" CD on air and leave. We've been doing it that way for six months with no trouble (but admittedly, it's probably a good idea to lock everything up, even during broad daylight, if no one's there). So they left this morning after locking the station. Unfortunately, 1) I didn't have a key and 2) I didn't have any phone numbers of anyone I could contact who might have a key. After a run to the local coffeehouse to dig through a phone book (to no avail), I went back to my office to look up some numbers online. Found one guy who I knew had a key -- called...no answer, no answering machine. Great. Called the station manager's office and sent him a frantic e-mail telling him what was up. At shortly before ten, Claire and I both met at the station and waited for someone to show. She ran to a nearby market to try to get in touch with someone (and eventually did, but it didn't matter). The station manager showed at about 10:20 and let us in. Gave me a bit of a tongue lashing for the whole thing (he was understandably annoyed, but I impressed upon him that it was not our fault), but we all got over it, I think. I now have a station key and the station manager's number in my wallet (two things I probably should've had all along), so this won't happen again. The 7 a.m. dudes can lock up to their hearts' content, for I WILL BE READY!

Oh, and then LiveJournal was down for maintenance from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. today, so I couldn't even tell anyone about it! What a day...

So there you go. Don't tell anyone. This could qualify as publicly airing slightly soiled station laundry...
