I had been thinking of theme show suggestion for a long time, but since you asked I always thought a "space show" would be fun, but I've never wrote down the songs on paper to see if there was 25 good ones worthy of a 2-hour show. We know there are several songs about being stranded in space, aliens, etc. and then when you add the cosmos like planets, moon and stars, etc., I think it could be done with little sweating.

But the one I was saving for you was more like a "challenge" than a "theme". Many times when I hear a song, I say to myself "I like the piano in that song" or "that song has a pipe organ. I like pipe organ.". So in that vain, I asked myself, could I make a playlist of "Favorite piano", etc. - and that would be the "challenge" - to ask Dr. Incognito to play a show of featuring a musical instrument. For me, the song wouldn't even have the instrument in all the song. it could be just a short fill or just in the background. For instance if I were doing piano, I would include "Rock the Casbash" even though the piano is just heard in a short intro (but what a great beginning - sometime short and sweet makes the greatest impression). Since there are many great instruments, I have many ones to pick from - beside The Piano Challenge, I like the Pipe Organ Challenge, Xylophone Challenge and Horn Challenge to name a few. I realize that the synth can duplicate any instrument, so some songs where I think there is an instrument it really might be a synth - so let's not read the liner notes and get picky. The only drawback is that you just can't do an alpha sort on your song collection for an instrument and you would have to review your library or past playlists. I would expect it could take a month or so to research the project and I don't know if you were wanting to invest that much effort. Then again, you might be able to pick 25 off the top of your head?

Of course, the fun is seeing what you come up with and no two persons would come up with the same list. If you are game, there could even be some back and forth, where you could lay down the gauntlet and I could respond with some picks myself. (we could work out details how to get you my flashdrive, etc).

I love your show regardless of whether you take up these ideas or not. I am totally invested in 80's Hades!

I could do a space show! That's a great idea. Let's keep that in mind!

Regarding the other proposal...I just saw the J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek again, so what just flooded into my mind is Chekov shouting "I can do this! I can do this!" as he races to the transporter room to try to grab Kirk and Sulu as they fall toward the surface of Vulcan.

I can do this instrument challenge! I can do this!!

It actually pings something my wife is always laughing about -- I'm always picking little riffs out of songs and going "Ooo..I love that part!". Half the time she's never noticed said riff. It's usually a little synth motif or sound. For one example that the Eel and I both love, listen to the little synth pulse after "Who is to blame in one country? Never can get to the one" line in "Electric Avenue". If that comes on while we're driving, the Eel and I will both put our hands on the dashboard and pound out that little riff. Anyway, yes. I can do this. If I had easy access to my CDs, I would be purist about getting the instrument right -- that's just how I roll -- but I don't (most of them are boxed up), so I'll do my best. And I would be happy to play your picks! We could either do them in the same show back-to-back, or we could play mine one week and yours the next. Either way's fine with me.

Let's save this for July or early August, though. I know I'll be here from mid-July on, and if you can get a list of instruments to me in the next week or so, that would give me plenty of time. Some I could probably just slap down quickly, but yeah, some will require research. I have ones in my head already for mandolin, xylophone...piano and horns provide many choices (now, do you want to be really badass and call for particular horns?), flute is pretty easy...I could do cello and presumably violin (though nothing for the latter leaps to mind)...pipe organ would be trickier, but "organ" wouldn't be hard (though what I'm thinking of right now is probably synth organ). Man, I could do heaps -- sitar, melodica, gamelan (I think)...let's do this! We could even have you phone in to discuss your picks, if you like and are available. I know how to do that now (after having a show for almost fifteen years...)

Next week I think we're going to try something unprecedented that could be a disaster in more ways than one. The Eel is going to drive around our hometown in northern Michigan, visiting sites that played key roles in our upbringing. We'll play songs that we associated with those sites and discuss our memories. It may not work at all, and if it does, it may be epically bad radio, but you never know until you try. I'll have a whole show lined up as a backup in case this all goes pear-shaped, but we'll give it a go!
