By request from wuenchdog, I bring you...THE SPACE SHOW. Two hours of songs about space, the moon, rockets, aliens, you name it. Some of the connections are a bit tenuous, and a lot of it is metaphorical, but here it is -- SPACE!

We begin with a tip of the hat to one of my heroes as an adolescent. In 1980, Voyager I was exploring the Jovian system, Carl Sagan was on PBS teaching us about the Cosmos, and Robin Williams was warping my world in Mork and Mindy. I was a total space freak at the time, and it's a wonder I never went as Mork for Halloween. RIP, Mr. Williams.

Mork and Mindy Opening Theme (Season 2, 1979)
Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Coming Home)
Planet P Project - I Won't Wake Up
A Certain Ratio - Saturn
The B-52's - 53 Miles West Of Venus
Devo - Space Junk
Big Dipper - Humason
The Human League - The Black Hit Of Space

Aliens attack!

The Rezillos - Flying Saucer Attack
20/20 - Alien
Charlie - Spacer Woman (Vocal Version)
Ende Shneafliet - Animals from Outer Space
Japan - Alien

And now...in honor of the recent "super moon", we're off to Luna!

Men Without Hats - Moonbeam
The Police - Walking On The Moon
The Alan Parsons Project - Children Of The Moon
The Bats - Man In The Moon
Primitons - Somewhere The Moon Is Calling
The Cramps - Rock on the Moon
Camper Van Beethoven - The Day That Lassie Went To The Moon

But how do we get there? Rockets and stuff, and maybe a stop at a space station on the way. What say you?

Def Leppard - Rocket
Game Theory - Watch Who You're Calling Space Garbage Meteor Mouth
Greg Hawkes - Voyage Into Space
Kraftwerk - Spacelab
The Creatures - Pluto Drive

'80s HADES Word of the Day

synecdoche (si-NEK-duh-kee) n.

A figure of speech in which the whole is substituted for a part, or a part for a whole, e.g., "a Scrooge" for a miserly man, "hired hands" for workmen or "the Navy" for a sailor.

Space Show

Woot! I hope to be uninterrupted and be able to enjoy this eclectic collection of space songs. Thanks for putting together! I was just listening to "Eye in the Sky" today so some Alan Parsons sounds good. Very curious about the Greg Hawkes as well.

Re: Space Show

Cool! I almost tried to do a whole space narrative, starting from a rocket launch to exploring the moon to meeting aliens, but it wouldn't have worked well, so instead, we'll hear a few space-themed half-hour segments.

On the Cars reunion tour a few years ago, The Eel and I met a twenty-something kid who had found a copy of Greg Hawkes's "Niagara Falls" on vinyl somewhere. I was quite jealous, but later found a halfway decent rip of the vinyl online. It never came out on CD. Synthy, almost totally instrumental goodness!
